EsophyX™ TIF

EsophyX TIF: A new alternative for GERD/heartburn

EsophyX transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) is an innovative natural orifice surgery for patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn. Compared to standard Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication, it involves no incisions and is associated with faster recovery.

Benefits of EsophyX

  • No incisions
  • No internal cutting
  • Reconstruction of normal anatomy

With patient under general anesthesia, EsophyX is inserted over gastroscope into the stomach and under visual control weakened gastresophageal valve is plicated with 8-12 fasteners to reproduce normal valve mechanism (see video).

Indications for EsophyX:
Procedure can be offered to patients with GERD without hiatal hernia or ONLY very small hiatal or diaphragmatic hernia (when stomach slides up into the chest).
Gastroesophageal valve reconstructed with EsophyX normally prevents exposure of the inner lining of the esophagus to stomach acid. With GERD this valve is dysfunctional (see video) and esophagus acid exposure causes irritation and sometimes ulceration, scarring which can lead to Barrett’s esophagus (a precancerous condition), laryngitis (inflammation of voice cord) and even bronchitis and asthma when gastric acid reaches lungs. Medication treatment reduces these symptoms but does not cure the condition. As a result of EsophyX TIF procedure normal functional anatomy of the gastroesophageal valve is restored (see video)

Is EsophyX safe?
Compared to standard Nissen Fundiplication, EsophyX demonstrated substantially lower complication rate since there is no incisions or dissection inside the stomach. Throat soreness, some degree of bloating are most frequently reported discomforts. There is a minimal risk of injury to internal lining of the throat or esophagus with passage of the instrument.

After the procedure
Procedure is performed under general anesthesia in the operating room and can be done as outpatient and with overnight stay. Patients are required to stay on liquid diet for 2 weeks and soft diet for additional 2 weeks to allow surgical site to heal without risk of suture disruption. Patients can return to their usual activities within days after surgery.
