Revision Bariatric Surgery

Indications for revision bariatric surgery fall in two broad categories:

  • Insufficient weight loss
  • Complication of initial bariatric surgery

With insufficient weight loss, revision surgery options will depend on type of initial bariatric procedure. Failed Gastric banding can be converted to Gastric Bypass or Gastric Sleeve. Previous horizontal gastroplasty (known as “Gastric Stapling”) or failed Gastric bypass, Non-divided Gastric Bypass require conversion to divided Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. With failed gastric bypass a newer procedure – StomaphyX – can be done to reduce size of gastric pouch without any incisions.

Depending on the type of complication with initial bariatric procedure a variety of surgical options exists to correct the problem. A detailed information (operative note) about initial procedure, X-rays and endoscopic evaluation will be required to determine what exactly will need to be done to correct a problem.
