Outcomes

We are a weight loss surgery center devoted to helping you attain the healthy lifestyle you’ve always wanted.  Our entire surgical team and staff provide the personalized care and attention you deserve, while using state-of-the-art procedures to help you reach your weight loss goals.  Based on extensive on-site review of our procedures and outcomes, the practice is recognized as a “Bariatric Center of Excellence” by the Surgical Review Committee of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.  St. Agnes Bariatric Program has performed over 2,500 bariatric procedures and is the No. 1 program in Maryland by number of surgeries per year since 2004.

A major review of the outcomes of bariatric surgery published in the Journal of the American Medical Association detailed numerous other benefits of weight loss surgery:

  • Diabetes of less then 10 years duration and without complication has resolved or improved in 80-90% of patients
  • High blood pressure is cured in 65% and resolved or improved in 78% of patients
  • High cholesterol resolved or improved in 70% of patients
  • Obstructive sleep apnea is cured in 86% of patients
  • Risk of premature death reduced by 90%.

Newer studies demonstrate resolution of fatty liver (potentially leading to cirrhosis) in 80%; improvement in joint pain; decreased heart problems; improvement in lung function, asthma, and fertility rate; and decreased frequency of heartburn disease, certain cancers and depression.

Immeasurable but dramatic is the improvement in ability to participate in physical and recreational activities, social and economic opportunities, as well as a general sense of well being.
