I am a general and bariatric surgeon with 30 years of experience, and I have been practicing at the St. Agnes Hospital since 2002. The nature of life gave me an opportunity to study art and science of surgery in both Old and New Worlds. Born in Moscow, Russia, I graduated from one of the oldest medical schools – N. Pirogov State Medical School in 1979. My surgical career started at the Hertzen Cancer Research Institute where I advanced from intern to Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology with special interest in gastric surgery. In 1992 I came to the USA and became a Clinical Research Fellow at the Washington Cancer Institute at the Washington Hospital Center. From 1997 to 2002 I was fully trained as a general and bariatric surgeon at the St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and went on to practice bariatric, general and laparoscopic surgery in 2002.
With years passed and thousands of patients treated, our Bariatric service is recognized as a “Center of Excellence” by ASBS Surgical Review Corporation. Over past years I have performed over 1,250 laparoscopic bariatric procedures without mortality and with low morbidity. We offer Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy and lap band surgery (LAP-BAND® and REALIZE® Band) as well as revision procedures when feasible including the incisionless StomafyX procedure.
Besides Bariatric surgery, our practice includes general, advanced laparoscopic surgery and surgical oncology.
I am frequently asked by my patients, "Do you like what you do?" The short answer is, "Definitely yes! Surgery is the passion of my life." Every craftsman - and surgery is a craft as much as it is science - loves his or her creation. Meeting a challenge, something others cannot or do not want to do, brings a special sense of achievement. This differs from my earlier years in surgery when I was performing surgical oncology surgery, where despite your best effort the nature of disease frequently took its toll. Bariatric surgery gives a unique opportunity to make patients’ life better for years to come. Sometimes a patient’s life is completely turned around and they become able to achieve something that was unthinkable before bariatric surgery. People become healthier and happier, enjoy a fulfilling life, and have children, and there is nothing more rewarding to a surgeon to know that his work was a part of it.
