Laparoscopic Reflux/Hiatal Hernia Repair

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease is a widespread condition presenting with heartburn, regurgitation, hoarsenes and pain or difficulty with swallowing food. It is a result of disfunction of the normal valve mechanism at the junction of the esophagus and stomach. It is often associated with hiatal hernia of variable degree. When stomach is displaced into the chest it can cause nausea, vomiting, pain after eating or progressive inability to swallow food.

This condition is usually treated with antacid medications. There some investigational treatment approaches to GERD involving new endoscopic techniques reliability of which at present is unproven. When these symptoms are associated with large hiatal hernia surgery becomes the only viable option especially if patient has difficulty eating, has pain or vomiting after eating.

Surgical solution for GERD is Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication. It can used to treats simple heartburn symptoms when patient does not want to constantly use medications or have severe regurgitation with damage to vocal cords. Presence of large hiatal hernia associated with more severe symptoms and can be associated with risk of stomach and other organs strangulation within the hernia. This group of patients has only one reliable treatment option - Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia repair without/with mesh and Nissen Fundoplication.

This minimally invasive procedure has a very good track record and is a State-of-the-Art surgical approach.

Since large proportion of our patients suffer from morbid obesity and GERD/Hiatal hernia we offer additional options in the treatment of this conditions. It is known that in obese patients results of anti-reflux surgery are inferior and are associated with higher rate of recurrence with increasing BMI (you can calculate you BMI by clicking on page above). In this situation bariatric surgery, primarily Gastric Bypass has been shown to resolve synptoms with adequate weight loss in 90-95% of patients
