Minimally invasive approach to a variaety of primary abdominal wall hernias (ventral, umbilical, inguinal or groin hernia) in recent years has gained wide acceptance. It allows more controlled repair of hernia since a defect in strong layer of abdominal wall is more visible than with open surgery and allows to detect obscured multiple hernias as well as shortens the recovery. Certainly as far as ventral incisional hernia is concerned - laparoscopic approach becomes far superior to open repair and is associated with lowest risk of recurrence and complications.
Not every general surgeon is adequately trained to perform laparoscopic hernia repair. Our practice is unique since we traditionally deal with most complicated cases of hernia in obese patients constituting a high risk group for complication and recurrence when open repair is done.
